ESE-2019 Prelims Ethics & Values in Engineering Profession

 80

While Engineering Marvels make lives of people better, accidents and disasters pose challenges to engineers in edition to affecting the public.  A deeper investigations of these mishaps leads to pointing the finger on the conduct of engineers, their inability to either identify or resolve the identified moral  issues in an appropriate manner. While sometime this inability can be traced to incompetence, majority of the times it turns out to be the pressure by the management whose priorities differ from that of the professional engineers. The engineer is pressed to handle these two factors along with his/her own ignorance or arrogance, to make sure that public is not victimized.

Therefore, there is a need to expose the engineering students to the ethical  considerations of engineering problems in edition to the technologies and standards taught in engineering education. While curriculum focuses on external engineering aspects in terms of meeting standards, facilitating practice of ethical conduct focuses on inner engineering and inculcates and nurtures the sense of responsibility and accountability in the engineering graduates. This further promotes integrity in the qualified engineers to conduct profession in the most ethical manner. This dimension of engineering education that gives inputs  on the ‘third dimension’ of engineering, viz., values of engineering profession can be termed as engineering aptitude.

UPSC Conducts engineering services to recruit engineering graduates in various  technical departments every year. From 2017onwards UPSC has included editional filter in the recruitments process for the candidates that tests them in engineering aptitude. ACE Engineering Academy, through its expertise has been in the forefront in training the candidates, giving them the critical tool of competence to get competitive advantage and perform better and excel in their career. One of the topics in engineering aptitude, “Ethics and Values in Engineering profession”, was conceived and curriculum delevopled to train the candidates. It is matter of satisfaction and pride that some of the practice questions and discussions held in the classroom teaching appeared in the ESE question papers.ACE is proud of its impactful and effective traning system that gave comfort and confidence to its candidates in the examination hall. This third edition is next step in pursuit of excellence in making the content further more relevant, comprehensive that can catalyze the performance of the candidates in the UPSC examination. Redundancy is at its minimum by way of providing all the relevant information in one place in this edition. Context fitting examples, illustrations, case studies and pictorial representation of some abstract concepts are some of the hallmarks incorporated in this edition. Some of the case studies and illustrations that were discussed in the classrooms have been incorporated in this book with the aim of making these discussions available to the candidates who cannot make it to classrooms. Authors are of the firm conviction that students would enjoy not only reading this new book but also content relevant practice questions included in the career. This edition is markedly different from previous editions with content relevant practice questions included in the appropriate places. Another deviation of this edition from previous editions is inclusion of previous ESE questions.

Authors have attempted sincerely to make this edition as error free as possible. Still some inadvertent mistakes could crept in but these are purely unintentional. Authors welcome any mistakes observed in this book. Authors thank all the support staff who have rendered their services in shaping this book to be as qualitative as possible.

ESE-2019 Prelims Standards & Quality Practices in Production, construction, Maintenance and Services

 100

I would like to welcome you all to yet another net worthy effort by ACE engineering publications for engineering services aspirants to learn, understand and appreciate the subject and quality practices in Production, construction Maintenance and services.

The key factors that are responsible for survival and performance excellence of any industry are customer satisfaction and return on the capital invested. This applies to both manufacturing and service sectors. To avoid intra country and inter country comparisons for products in the market, there arises a need for uniformity in standards, established codes  and procedures for meeting customer expectations. Hence the standards and quality practices play an important ole. For this requirement to be met ISO is ensuring equality in the standards of products and services.

ISO is striving relentlessly to institute quality policies to shape the behaviour and establish core values in an organisation and therefore contribute to corporate policy, control charts. Acceptance sampling systems, continuous improvement techniques are used by every organisation throughout the world to improve product quality service quality and reduce cost. The most effective use of these techniques depends upon they being understood by production and inspection supervisors by engineers and by managements.

Rules and regulations for improving quality in all disciplines was documented by quality  guru’s in the quality philosophers, which are advocated throught out the world.

We tired our level best in the first attempt  to give the best possible theory with relevant objective questions. You know there is no end for the best . It is process. We welcome the suggestions by readers with respect to content and questions. Any mistakes typographical/others may please be brought to the notice of us, for which we will be grateful to you.

The student must go through the solutions for conventional questions asked prior to 2003, to bridge up the concepts by solving conventional questions this will facilitate the students  to answer  the numerical type questions, and also  Common data and linked questions, easily.

The student is advised to solve the problems without referring  the solutions. The student has to analyse the given questions carefully, identify the concept on which the question is framed, recall the relevant equations, find out the desired answer, verify the answer with the final key such as (a), (b), (c), (d), then go through the hints to clarify his answer. This will help to face numerical questions, better. The student is advised to have a standard text book ready for reference to strengthen the related concepts, if necessary. The student is advised not to write the solution steps in the space around the question. By doing so, he lose an opportunity of effective revision.

In 2018, for the first time,  one single set of question paper is prepared to conduct the online examination for all candidates who are appearing for the exam. In GATE-18 , ( CSIT) around 37% of question paper is asked in the form of numerical type. It is expected that this will be continue even in 2019. Framing of questions in the forth coming examinations may turn difficult. Because, examiners need to prepare a single set of question paper, covering wide range of topics from the whole syllabus, due to which it turns difficult for students to make any predictions in the examination. Students are strongly advised to cover whole of the syllabus without leaving any topic in any subject while their preparation.

It is believed that this book is a valuable aid to the student’s appearing for competitive exams like ISRO and other PSUs. This book can also be used by fresh teachers in Engineering in improving their Concepts.
